Museum will open a major gallery exhibition to focus on the Gettysburg
Campaign and the Defense of Harrisburg during one of the most dramatic,
defining moments of the American Civil War.
The exhibition provides some rare glimpses into the overall Gettysburg
Campaign, which involved the capture of the nearby towns and villages
along the approach to the Pennsylvania state capital. Carlisle and Camp
Hill were actually attacked and occupied for a time by Confederate
forces whose mission was to attack and seize Harrisburg. The cities of
York and Mechanicsburg actually surrendered to the Confederate
forces.

Confederate Encampment June 7-8
The National Civil War Museum will present an
Encampment of Confederate Infantry on June 7 and 8.
The camp will be open to the public from 10:00AM to 5:00PM on
Saturday and from 12:00 Noon to 4:00PM on Sunday.
The Stonewall Brigade, with members from Pennsylvania,
Maryland and Virginia, will show how Confederate soldiers actually lived
while on campaign.
“This will not be the typical re-enactor camp,” said Larry
Keener-Farley, the Museum’s Education Director.
“You will not see a field of white tents, so-called camp furniture,
and women cooking meals for soldiers.”
These living historians, who are among the few allowed
to present programs at national battlefield parks, take great pride in
depicting how the army actually looked and behaved while on the march. The men will portray the Stonewall Brigade in 1864, when it
returned to defend Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Each man will have only what he can carry on his back for a
twenty-mile march, he will sleep under the stars, and he will cook and
eat period rations with a minimum of utensils.
Throughout both days, educational programs will feature drill
demonstrations, musket firings, talks about uniforms and equipment,
field cooking, and the camp life of the typical Southern soldier on
campaign.
Exact times of demonstrations will be posted at the Museum.

May 18, 2003 - 2:00pm -- Lecture
Ivan Frantz, Jr., will speak on the role of the Pennsylvania Railroad
during the Civil War at The National Civil War Museum.
Railroads changed the face of warfare in
the 1860s and Harrisburg was one of the most important railroad centers
during the Civil War. Vast numbers of troops and huge quantities
of supplies passed by rail through Pennsylvania on the way to the
battlefields across the country. Extensive and well-run railroads
were essential to the Northern victory. Frantz will bring this
exciting era of steam and iron to life with a slide-illustrated lecture.
The National Civil War Museum, The Camp
Curtin Historical Society and the North American Railway Foundation
sponsor this program jointly. For more information, telephone
717-260-1861.
