The School of the Soldier
Museum
Offers Enlistment and Instruction Activities
as Part of Summer Living History
Harrisburg, PA (July 29, 2005) -
History comes alive at The National Civil War Museum on August 6th
and 7th. Throughout the weekend, skilled
reenactors from Battery A, 3rd U.S. Artillery will demonstrate the firing
procedure of artillery in the Civil War.
Using an original bronze tube from the Civil War, the living
historians will be demonstrating the art of the artilleryman, how the gun
was fired and how artillery was employed.
Saturday
will also bring enlistment and instruction in The School of the Soldier
as the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry will be providing recruitment
opportunities for guests. Space is limited for this all day event. Interested parties should contact the Museum in advance.
The
83rd Infantry will offer guests an opportunity to experience life as a
reenactor for the day. Beginning
at 8:30 a.m. participants will be outfitted in reproduction uniforms and
equipment. Instruction on the manual of arms, how to march and the daily
life of a common soldier will all be part of the day’s activities.
Participants in the recruitment program must be twelve years of age
or older. Lunch will be
included.
At
the end of the day, interested recruits will be provided with information
about enlisting as regular members of the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer
Infantry.
The living history activities will take place on the
Parade Grounds behind the Museum. The
artillery demonstration will be held during regular Museum hours each day.
Both programs are weather
contingent, and are free of charge with admission to the Museum.
While at the Museum, make sure to visit These
Tattered Flags. Serving
as unique symbols of American history, flags are the focus of the
Museum’s newest temporary showing, located in the gallery on the first
floor. The historical
examples, unique designs and rare artifacts will be on exhibit through the
end of the year.
The National Civil War Museum, which has an on-site,
full-service café, will be open Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Admission
to the Museum is $7.00 for adults, with reduced rates for children,
seniors, military personnel and families.
