The National Civil War Museum
to Honor Veterans
Museum to Offer Free Admission to Veterans
and Military Service Members on Veterans Day

Harrisburg, PA (November 8, 2004) - The National Civil War Museum, located just off State Street in Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, will offer FREE ADMISSION ON VETERANS DAY, November 11 through the weekend.  The special no cost admission rate applies to veterans, active duty military service members, military retirees, and National Guard personnel, as well as police, fire and EMS workers.

Typically closed on Federal holidays, the Museum recognized the appropriate need to honor the men and women who have served, and are currently serving our country.

“It is appropriate for The National Civil War Museum to be open on Veterans Day.  During the Civil War, 700,000 Americans perished in the fight to define the freedoms we enjoy today,” comments George E. Hicks, Chief Executive Officer of The National Civil War Museum.  “This is just a small ‘thank you’ for their huge commitment to our nation.  We cordially invite our military service members and retirees to visit us on this day honoring America’s veterans - - and are also pleased to extend that invitation to the police, fire and EMS workers, to acknowledge their daily efforts in our community.”

Fought across the nation, the American Civil War was one of the most important events in the history of our land.  Its effects have been indelible, changing everything from politics and economy to industry and business - - not to mention freedom, as we know it.

The National Civil War Museum is the first museum of its kind, a place where you can observe the multitude of human experiences that made up the war and helped define the America enjoy today.  From slavery, to camp life, to the furor of battle, the Museum immerses visitors in the Civil War.  Focusing on the entire Civil War, from beginning to end, the Museum brings history to life with extensive collections of Union and Confederate artifacts, balanced portrayals of events, high definition videos and life-size dioramas.

In addition to the seventeen gallery presentations which share the tragedy of war, the Museum has several new exhibitions in place.

An exclusive short-term display entitled The Trevilian Station Exhibit is currently running and is scheduled to be in place through April 2005.  This collection presents Brigadier General Custer’s frock coat and numerous personal possessions including his handsome Tiffany presentation sword.  Confederates captured these items on June 11, 1864.  On that day, Custer’s command was under orders to effect “the complete and thorough destruction of the Virginia Central Railroad.”  The special presentation marks the first time such items have been on public display east of the Mississippi River.  Following exhibition at the Museum, the historic items will become part of a presentation at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.

The National Civil War Museum, which has an on-site, full-service café and museum shop, will be open Veterans Day through Saturday, November 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 14th from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free of charge for veterans, active duty military, military retirees, National Guard personnel, police, fire and EMS workers with appropriate identification.  Admission to the Museum for the general public is $7.00 for adults, with reduced rates for children, seniors and families.  For more information please call 717.260.1861, or visit the Museum’s website at www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org.
