“Meet Our Living Historians” Program at Museum
The
National Civil War Museum will present a special “Meet Our Living
Historians” program from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM, on Sunday, November 9.
Museum visitors will have an opportunity to meet the volunteers who
present the educational living history programs at the Museum. Union and
Confederate military units and civilian organizations will be represented.
Indoor tabletop displays will feature original artifacts and reproduction
items. Visitors will learn about how the past is recreated and obtain
information on joining this fascinating hobby.
“Living historians bring history to life by demonstrating how people did
things in the in the past,” said Lawrence Keener-Farley, the Museum’s
Education Director, “instead of merely seeing an artifact in a display
case or reading a book about how something was done, museum visitors see
demonstrations, using original or reproduction items.” Throughout the
year, the Museum conducts programs that include cannon firings, infantry
drill demonstrations, campaign cooking, military music, medicine, and
dancing.” This event is also an excellent opportunity for teachers and
students to meet and talk with people who have an in depth knowledge of
various aspects of Civil War history.
The Museum will also present information on its 2004 Summer History Honors
Program for students, ages 11 to 15. This educational program features
instruction in infantry drill, presentations on a variety of Civil War
topics, and an opportunity to handle 140-year old artifacts.
Admission to the Museum is $7.00 for adults, with reduced rates for
children, seniors and families. For more information, telephone
