A Temporary Exhibition:  February 1, 2008 - August 31, 2008

 "Escape from the Peculiar Institution:  Slavery, Abolitionism &
  the Underground Railroad"

The exhibit will examine the institution of slavery as it applied to the United States, giving the visitor a fresh perspective on the political and social climate in the years leading up to and during the Civil War.

Original artifacts including whips, shackles, and reward posters will address the harsh realities of slavery and the determined efforts to end it.  Prominent events that either sustained the institution or broke down and eventually ended slavery will be discussed, with an emphasis on the Underground Railroad.

Entrance to the temporary exhibit is included with the purchase of your museum admission ticket.

Encampment of the 42nd Mississippi Infantry, Company F

Reenactors will dress in authentic uniforms and equipment, carry reproduction weapons and camp in authentic tents. The civilians will work on sewing, weaving projects & of course fresh butter!

Encampment of a Confederate Civil War artillery unit - Purcell's Battery, the "Fauquier Artillery". 

Loading and firing demonstrations will be conducted each day.  Museum visitors will see the flash, smell the smoke and hear the roar of Civil War cannons. 

This educational program for the entire family is designed to bring history to life.  These living historians will explain how the guns were used in action and their impact on the battlefield.   The volunteer artillerymen will also explain the technology of artillery and the safety practices required in the 1860's.  This program is weather contingent.

Temporary Exhibit - The Art of War:  October 10 - January 13, 2008

 

 
 

The Art of War covers the art of common soldiers with their original drawings and carvings done in camp, in prison and back home as veterans.  In addition to soldier art, this exhibit shows the work of artists of the time and how they were inspired by the war.  This soldier art will be displayed at the Museum through January 13, 2008.

Harrisburg Toys for Tots

 

For the Seventh consecutive year, The National Civil War Museum and the US Marine Corps have teamed up to bring Christmas to Harrisburg area children. The museum will be accepting toys through Dec. 13, 2007. Visitors who bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more will receive one free admission to the museum as a gift for supporting the local Toys for Tots program.

This year, WALMART will be sponsoring the kick-off ceremony on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 9:30am.  Please join us in our Grand Rotunda to ensure that these needy children have a happy holiday!

Christmas in the 1860's:  Friday, November 23, 2007,  10:00am-4:00pm




  




The Victorian Dance Ensemble will be at the Museum from 10am-4pm to demonstrate dances of the era.  Afterwards, visitors will be invited to learn a dance and join in the spirit of the season.

The ensemble will also display original photographs, newspapers and Victorian jewelry from members' collections.  Other displays will include a gift box sent to soldiers by civilians and a period tabletop Christmas tree, with homemade ornaments.  Museum guests will also have an opportunity to try on reproduction Civil War era clothing.

In perfect time for the holiday season, the Museum will also offer discounts on memorial bricks.  Bricks normally priced at $75.00, will be priced at the discounted rate of $65.00.

The National Civil War Museum turned five on Sunday, February 12. To celebrate, and to thank the Harrisburg community for its support, the Museum offered visitors free admission for the day-long event. Living historians Larry Clowers and Dick Crozier as “Gen. Ulysses S. Grant” and “Gen. Robert E. Lee” cut a ceremonial cake using a Civil War sword. Launch video

Veteran's Day Ceremony:  Friday, November 11, 2005

Representatives from the 28th Infantry Division and Harrisburg’s Mayor Stephen Reed met atop Reservoir Park at The National Civil War Museum to pay tribute to all United States Veterans.  Mayor Reed laid a wreath at the Moment of Mercy statue in front of the museum in memoriam.
